Export Processing Zones

Sector Overview

The Export Processing Zones (EPZs), administered by the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA), are among the country’s leading centres for export-oriented industrial development. Currently, more than 557,000 workers are directly employed in eight EPZs and the BEPZA Economic Zone, with women representing approximately 56% of the workforce. In FY 2024–25, enterprises operating in these zones exported goods worth USD 8.22 billion, accounting for over 17% of Bangladesh’s national exports.

EPZs host a diverse range of industries, including garments, footwear, leather goods, electronics, and light engineering, and play a significant role in promoting employment, investment, and export diversification. Recognising the need to protect workers from the economic consequences of occupational injuries, the Employment Injury Scheme (EIS) Pilot has been introduced in selected EPZ industries.
